Former Bills safety Micah Hyde gets real and shoots down popular narrative about his future
Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

Former Buffalo Bills safety and current free agent Micah Hyde talked to reporters at his recent 2024 Charity Softball Game organized by his foundation, IMagINe for Youth, and addressed a popular narrative about his current status ahead of the 2024 NFL regular season.

Fans and media members have speculated that Hyde - who recently claimed it's "Bills or retire" remains a free agent in an attempt to skip the early phases of the offseason, including OTAs, which kick off on Monday for the Bills.

Such practice is very common for NFL veterans that have been playing football for a long time and the 33-year-old Hyde would be a prime candidate for such an approach. However, he was quick to shoot the narrative down.

"As of right now, I am just trying to be healthy, trying to be as healthy as possible," Hyde told reporters. "I understand the senioritis, I had it when I was a senior (in college), it's definitely not that."

As Hyde focuses on his body during this portion of the offseason, he doesn't rule out a return to the playing field neither a return to the Bills.

"I just want to be healthy, and right now I'm enjoying the time with the family," Hyde added. "If there's a case where I can ever get back on the football field, I would love to do it, especially in (the Bills') uniform. In front of these fans, it would mean the world to me and for my family, for everybody, to be able to do that."

Hyde dealt with a significant neck injury in 2022 after a hit in Week 2, and he later described as eye-opening. Last year, he suffered from multiple stingers throughout the season, something that has seemingly led to him taking a more cautious approach.

"But, you know, it's a ways away," Hyde admitted when talking about a potential return. "I woke up a few times last couple of weeks with sore necks, and at this point, I talked to you guys all season long, I've been 100% open with how I feel and going forward with the stingers and all that. So I would love to say that I am having senioritis, but that's definitely not the case."

Listening to Hyde talk, it certainly seems like he's being honest about strongly considering retiring ahead of the 2024 season as he continues to battle neck soreness.

"When I hear that (Bills Hey-ey-ey-ey chant), it means the world to me but it doesn't give me the itch that I got to put the shoulder pads on, helmet on, and run through a wall, no, it definitely doesn't," he candidly said.

Whether he returns to the playing field or not, Hyde sent a strong message to Bills Mafia:

"I will forever be a part of Bills Mafia that's for sure. I will always be rooting for the Bills."
